Whenever I hear the term Chick Lit, I automatically think of the iconic heroine we know and love in Bridget Jones’s Diary. Written by Helen Fielding in the early naughties and narrated by Imogen Church in 2013, the Audible version does justice to this British romantic comedy novel. Imogen gives a solid dimension to Bridget’s frustrations and real-life daily trauma’s as a singleton in Britain, with gusto, mirth and touch of sympathy. A really fun listen.
If you like your romances a little more serious than side splittingly funny, then the most touching romance I have listened to recently is a Fault in Our Stars, written by John Green, and narrated by the award-winning narrator Kate Rudd. This title is a romance through and through as it follows two teenagers suffering with terminal illness, and their exploration of being alive and being in love.
Kate’s narration shows the depth of Hazel’s quirky independent spirit, and the rawness of emotion she experiences in her relationship with fellow Cancer Support group member Augustus Waters, and their quest to make life count. I cannot recommend this book highly enough as an audio experience, and the same goes for the rest of Kate Rudd’s work.
As a narrator myself, I often get the most wonderful books to read. Last year ‘After Eden’ was released, a novel by Helen Douglas, and this Romance follows a time traveller through his trip to the here and now in Cornwall, and his falling for local girl, Eden. The day Eden meets Ryan changed her world forever. Actually, not just her world, since as Ryan has time traveled from the future to save the world, the entire planet’s existence could be in danger. Will the distraction of meeting Eden put the whole planet in jeopardy? A really touching romance, that I thoroughly enjoyed narrating. Listen to the audio version (contains audio extracts from the books) or read this blog. The choice is yours.
